AmpliMed Corporation Initiates Phase I Clinical Trial of Amplimexon

Novel cancer chemotherapy to be studied at Arizona Cancer Care Center

Tucson, AZ, September 23, 2003 – AmpliMed Corporation, a privately-owned pharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of novel cancer chemotherapies, today announced the initiation of a Phase I clinical trial of its lead drug, Amplimexon (imexon).

The trial will be conducted at the Arizona Cancer Center, under the direction of Tom Dragovich, MD, section of Hematology and Oncology, and is being jointly supported by the National Cancer Institute and AmpliMed.

"It is fitting that Amplimexon has entered clinical trials at the Arizona Cancer Center, which played a key role in its development," said Evan Hersh, MD, president and CEO of AmpliMed. "We believe that the drug has great promise and that the expert team at the Arizona Cancer Center will quickly and efficiently complete the Phase I safety studies and move the drug forward into Phase II for evaluation of its potential efficacy."

Amplimexon is a novel chemotherapeutic agent, which has potential clinical activity in several different types of malignancy, without certain side effects which often limit the utility of other cancer drugs. The first Phase I clinical trial of Amplimexon is designed to assess how well the drug is tolerated when given alone to a mixed group of cancer patients. The dosing schedule involves a thirty-minute drug infusion each day for five days, repeated every two weeks. It is anticipated that the study will recruit approximately 20 patients over a period of 6-9 months.
